How to Back up files using Windows XP built-in software...

Windows XP makes it easy to backup  your music, documents, pictures, and other files. With Windows XP, you don't need any other software to copy files to a CD for safe keeping. You will need a CD burner and a writable CD blank, and if you have Windows XP, that's it....you won't need any other software.

Step One: Select the files

  1. Open your My Documents folder

  2. Select the files you want to burn to CD.
---To select a single file. click on it to highlight the file.
---To select multiple files, hold down the CTRL key while you click on each file  you want to backup
---If you want to select all the files in the folder, click on Select All from the Edit menu. (Be sure that the total size of all files selected will fit on a CD.)

Step Two: Copy your files to your CD drive

  1. In the Task Pane, click Copy the selected items

  2. The Copy Items dialog window opens

  3. Select your DVD-RW Drive

  4. Click Copy

  1.

  1. When the copy process has completed, Click the Icon in the lower right corner.

Note: If the message (balloon) disappears before you can click it, Open My Computer and click on the DVD-RW Drive.

  1. Your selected files are now ready to
    write to a CD.

(If you haven't already done so, insert a blank CD in the selected drive.)

  2. Click Write these files to CD

  1. The CD Writing Wizard will open. If the CD name field is blank, type a name for the CD. (Note: By default, Windows names the CD with the current date.)

  2. Click Next. You will see the copy progression window.

  3. The CD Writing Wizard copies the files to your CD, which may take several minutes, depending on how many files you are copying.

  4. After the wizard has copied the files to your CD, click Finish.

  5. If you didn't check the "Close the wizard..etc" option, the wizard will open another window where you can select to write the files to another CD.

  6. Click Finish and your CD should automatically eject.

  7. Remove the CD from your computer and label it with a marker, and store it in a safe place.

Note: If you are backing up personal and/or financial information it probably would be a good idea to store the CD off site...like in your safety deposit box.

That's it!
