MS Word Tip

So you are now the proud owner of the latest and greatest word processing software - Microsoft Word 2007. It will do wonderful things. BUT, one thing it will not do is open in earlier versions of Word. That's right - if you send a Word 2007 document to someone who has an earlier version of Word, they cannot read your document.

What can you do to avoid upsetting and confusing your friends and co-workers? Simple:

  • Make sure you save your document in Word 2007, then

  • Click File on the Menu Bar and select Save as ( or hit F12 )

  • At the bottom of the Save As window is the Save as type box - click on its drop-down menu button to the right.

  • The 3rd (third) option is Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc). Select this option, then save the document.

  • Use this document to give, send, email to others that do not have Word 2007.

Word 2007 has a file extension of .docx, while earlier versions of Word have file extension of .doc

Problem: You are the owner of Microsoft Word 2003, or earlier, and keep receiving Word 2007 documents that you cannot open. Is there anything you can do? Yes!

Microsoft has written a conversion utility that will convert Word 2007 documents into earlier Word format. However, If the document uses any of the newer functions in Word 2007, you will not be able to completely edit the document, but you will be able to read it.

In your browser address pane type in www.microsoft.com/downloads. In the Download webpage find and select Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

Click on Instructions and follow the steps listed there.
